Pregnancy Chiropractic Care

Expecting moms are going through a transformational experience as their baby grows and thrives inside of them. At Foundation Family Chiropractic, we understand the unique demands that pregnancy places on a woman’s body and can help you enjoy the best of health for an optimal pregnancy. Though we offer Pregnancy Chiropractic Care at all of our clinics, Foundation Family Chiropractic Mt. Pleasant is located inside the Charleston Birth Place. As such, we have the privilege of seeing many expecting moms and newborns. Chiropractic care can make a world of difference to mom, baby and the entire family.

Improving Form and Function

Our first goal for you as a pregnant practice member is to keep you healthy and able to do the things you want to. Secondly, we want to align your pelvis so that your baby can have room to grow and develop. Both of these outcomes are a result of allowing your body and your baby’s body to do what they were created to, expressing total health and optimal function.

Starting Your Pregnancy Off Right

It’s best to start chiropractic care as soon as you find out you’re expecting, so we can then work to eliminate the risk of common issues such as sciatica, low back pain and headaches. Our initial examination process is designed to check that chiropractic care is completely appropriate for you before we move forward. Our chiropractors tailor their adjustments to your needs, with comfortable pregnancy pillows and lower-force techniques.

Dr. Kyle
and Dr. Molly are certified in the Webster Technique, which assists with aligning your pelvis. Studies support that moms under chiropractic care during their pregnancies require fewer interventions, have shorter labor times and less complications. Though many people believe Webster is a technique for turning babies, that is not the focus of using this method. Instead, it is a specific way to analyze your sacrum. There are ligaments that attach to the uterus from your sacrum and pelvis. We balance the pelvis so it can move freely, decreasing the stress on the uterus. In turn, your baby can do what they naturally should and get into the right position for birth.

When your baby is born, we welcome them to become a practice member, too. Dr. Kyle and Dr. Adam have training in pediatric care and understand the gentle touch that they require when there is a structural problem present. Even a natural birth puts pressure on the baby, and in studies, up to 80% of newborns have been shown to have a subluxation. The absence of problems doesn’t always indicate perfect health, either, since babies can’t tell us when something is wrong. With a chiropractic checkup, we can make sure their nervous system functions as it should, avoiding many common pediatric issues.

Pregnant moms can’t get X-rays because of the risk to their baby. Instead, we can get a full, deep picture of your state of health with the INSiGHT™ Subluxation Station. With this technology, we take three scans: Thermography. Locates temperature variations on either side of the spine to detect stress compensation patterns. Surface electromyography. Measures the electrical activity in your muscles, indicating how the brain is communicating to the body. Heart rate variability. Evaluates the interval of your heart rate to determine overall nervous system capacity. These scans are noninvasive and pain-free, taking just minutes to complete.

How often will I need to get adjusted?

The recommended frequency of your visits is based on your scans and objective testing. Though symptoms are important and we want you to feel better, we use objective measures to see how you’re improving.
Do I need a referral from my OB?
No. Chiropractors are primary care doctors. If you aren’t in the right place, we’ll refer you to another specialist.
Is it safe to get adjusted during pregnancy?
Yes. We take extra precautions such as specialized tables and pillows so we can provide comfortable care. There is never force or twisting in the pelvis or low back. With our many tools, we can safely analyze and adjust expecting moms.
How long should I wait before I bring my baby in to get checked?
The youngest baby we’ve had under our care was 15 minutes after birth, with the umbilical cord still attached. As soon as you’re ready to come to the office with your baby, we encourage you to get them checked.
